October Poems

Autumn Leaves

Crunch, crunch, scrunch, scrunch,
Walking through the leaves.
They're red and yellow, orange too.
Falling from the trees.
Swirling, whirling down they come,
Making a big pile.
Soon we'll have to rake them,
So let's jump in them awhile.
Chilly winds will be coming
And blow the leaves around.
Then pull those leaves still on the trees,
And toss them to the ground.

Changes

Squirrels collect brown acorns.
Chipmunks burrow in.
Wild geese honk overhead.
Leaves party in the wind.
I button up my sweater.
It's warm against my skin.
Nighttime comes so quickly.
Autumn's here again.

Picking Pumpkins

Let's go to the pumpkin patch
To search among the vines
For a perfect little pumpkin
That I can call just mine.
I'll know it when I see it.
A bright orange it will be.
I'll pick it very carefully,
Then take it home with me!

—Sheila Forsyth

Night Owl

Night owl eyes
Blink open wide.
Night owl wings
Flap side to side.
Night owl's head
Moves to and fro.
Night owl claws
Snap fast and slow.
Night owl screeches,
"Whooo, whooo, whooo,
Wants to be a
Night owl, too?"

—Carol Quinn

Bats

Little brown bats are gentle And they are very shy.
They have strong toes and large wings
That help them stretch and fly.

Bats eat big mosquitoes
And other bugs with wings.
They move quite quickly in the dark
And don't bump into things.

A bat makes clicking noises
Out in the dark of night
Then he listens for the echoes
To help him to fly right.

Matches Aren't For Play

I saw a book of matches
Out on a tabletop.
I went to pick the matches up
But something made me stop.
I suddenly remembered
That matches aren't for play.
A fire could start with matches.
I could get hurt that way.

—Kathleen M. Hollenbeck

Fire

Sirens singing, Fire bells ringing
Engines race about.
Firefighters working,
Water squirting,
Put the fire out!
Take care when you
Hear the engines,
Don’t get in the way.
Thank the firefighters
For working bravely
Every day.
