Poor in America

Doing More

After sharing the news update with students, ask: Are you surprised that there are so many working poor in Morris County? Why? Why not? Are you surprised that there would be so many children on food stamps along the U.S. Mexico border in Texas? Give reasons for your answer.

Every city and county keeps records on its own poverty rate. Call or visit your local government office to get this figure. Compare it to the national poverty rate. What do you think your local community can do about helping poor families?
