Welcome back, teachers! I hope you all had a great summer. We've been working very hard to bring you another great year of interesting articles in Know Your World Extra. This magazine is a high-interest magazine for students who read below level.

We have loads of great articles for your students, but what we're really excited about is our Write-a-Rap contest. Download the entry form here.

In issue 1, we travel vicariously with pop-singer and former American Idol contestant Clay Aiken to Afghanistan. Aiken is a celebrity ambassador for UNICEF and is looking to bring awareness of the conditions of the country.

We also have a great debate and our popular Reader's Theater section.

What's So Funny
In issue 1, we showed you some winners of our What's So Funny page, which featured a tough guy on a pink bike. Here are all of our favorites:

  • "I need to lose some pounds!" Ben E., Elsmere, KY
  • "I can't believe I lost this bet ... Whee!" Drew T., New Castle, PA
  • "Where's that little girl with my bike?" Francisco A., Avondale, AZ
  • "I'm burly but gurly." Derek K., Milaca, MN
  • "Oops, I forgot to get my training wheels!" Deavan, Aurora, MO
  • "I can't wait for the gas prices to go down!" Brandon, Karan, and Jeff, Waunakee, WI

Check back next month for new What's So Funny entries!

For Teachers
Our teacher's guide offers activities to enhance the articles in the issue. We have more activities for you here.

As always, we'd love to hear from you! If you have any questions or comments, e-mail us at kyw@weeklyreader.com. We want to hear from your students too. In every issue, we'll publish letters to the editor.
