WELCOME! to Current Health 2's Web extension for December 2008.

The holidays are generally thought of as a time to pig out on special treats at parties and veg out with TV football and seasonal movies. But it doesn't have to be that way. Considering that most of us will spend at least some time shopping in the next few weeks, the article "Healthy Holiday Shopping" is likely to come in handy. Help your students get the most out of their mall trip by encouraging them to make smart choices. That's a gift they can give themselves—and it's free!

But not everyone can enjoy the holiday warmth. Some people are suffering from a mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, or a breakup with their significant other; others, like the teens interviewed for "Heroin's Hold," are caught in addictions. Our December issue addresses all three of these serious topics and helps readers understand how to cope in each situation.

We wish you and your students a very happy, safe, and healthy holiday season. We'll see you next year!

Cordially,

Meredith Matthews

P.S. This issue, with its story on appendicitis, is dedicated to the memory of Sarah McCallum Cristiano.
