WELCOME! to Current Health 2's Web extension for February 2008.
Newspaper and magazine editors often pride themselves on the ability to anticipate news before it happens. We here at Current Health 2 are no exception, though our early print deadlines sometimes mean that today's breaking news will be long forgotten by the time an issue of the magazine comes out. Other times, though, we wish were wrong.
Months ago, we planned a story on the effects of war on civilians' health, and specifically on children's health. The result is "War Child," a four-page article in our February issue. But it happens that we're not the only ones paying attention to this health crisis--the newest issue of the journal Pediatrics features a paper detailing pediatric admissions to U.S. Army hospitals in Afghanistan and Iraq over a three-year period. We wish our article wasn't so newsworthy, but hope it helps your students understand these and timely events.
Cordially,
Meredith Matthews
* Note: In the Safety Zone article "Sit Tight," one tip in the Air Bags column advises drivers to protect themselves from air bag injury by placing hands at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions on the steering wheel. It appears the sources we relied upon in writing the article have failed to update their information to include the latest recommendations; the American Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association now recommends positioning the left hand between 7 and 9 o'clock, and the right hand between 3 and 5 o'clock. Special thanks to CH2 subscriber Chris Davis, Driver Education/Health and Physical Education teacher at Smethport Junior/Senior High School in Smethport, Pa., for alerting us to this discrepancy.
**Special feature: Are cases of drug-resistant infections like MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) popping up in your community? To help your students learn more about this growing health problem, Current Health 2 is making available an article on MRSA we published in December 2006. Click here to access it.
