It's hard enough to have siblings--everyday life presents many opportunities to squabble and spar with each other. But this normal sibling rivalry can grow even more pronounced when both siblings have a common interest--say, playing shortstop or singing first-soprano parts. The trick is to learn how these situations can actually improve siblings' abilities and relationship with each other. You can use "Sibling Competition" (page 12) to highlight ways for your students to compete with a brother or sister in an activity that both love.
Maybe the chosen arena of competition for some of your students is the kitchen. In that case, they're well suited for creating healthy lunches in our second annual Recipalooza contest. They can even enter with a sibling--or each can come up with a different dish. We'll put the winning recipes up on our Web site, and award their creators with a cash prize. To enter, click here for an entry form. But hurry, the deadline is March 15. Hooray for healthy lunches!
Sincerely,
Meredith Matthews
