Issue 22 News Updates

WRINGING DRY

On April 17, California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined thousands of other Californians in a five-day “March for Water Rally.” The purpose of the march was to draw attention to California's severe water crisis.

“This march,” the governor told the Los Angeles Times, “is about opening our eyes to reality…that farmers do not have a reliable water supply…farm workers fear losing their jobs because crops are not being planted, and in [farm] towns unemployment is skyrocketing.”

The march was joined by farmers, mayors, students, politicians and business owners. Lack of water has forced California farmers to leave 100,000 acres unplanted. Since the state provides nearly half of America's fresh fruits, nuts and vegetables, the prices of all these agricultural products will rise, affecting the entire country.

Schwarzenegger promised to implement a state emergency plan to counteract the drought and promote greater water conservation.
