Issue 21 News Updates

  • The Associated Press found during its investigation that water providers were leery about informing the public about pharmaceuticals in water supplies. Elaine Archibald, executive director of California Urban Water Agencies, summed up the reason given by many water suppliers: customers “don’t know how to interpret the information. They hear something has been detected in source water and drinking water, and that’s cause for alarm — just because it’s there.”

  • The government’s decision to flood the Grand Canyon for three days in March created the sandbars that officials were hoping to see, Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Steve Martin told The Associated Press. "On a couple of big sandbars there were already beaver tracks, bighorn sheep tracks," Martin said. "You could see the animals already exploring new aspects of the old canyon."

  • Whole Foods is putting an end to the “paper or plastic” debate at its grocery stores for good. On Earth Day, April 22, it will stop stocking disposable plastic grocery bags at its stores nationwide. Whole Foods is encouraging shoppers to bring their own bags—any type, from backpacks to canvas bags to bags made of recycled soda bottles. Shoppers who forget their bags shouldn’t fret. The store will keep a stash of recycled paper bags on hand just in case.
