The Associated Press found during its investigation that water providers were leery about informing the public about pharmaceuticals in water supplies. Elaine Archibald, executive director of California Urban Water Agencies, summed up the reason given by many water suppliers: customers “don’t know how to interpret the information. They hear something has been detected in source water and drinking water, and that’s cause for alarm — just because it’s there.”
