Justice Matters

  • Split the class into nine groups. Have each group research a current U.S. Supreme Court justice. Each group should write a speech for that justice explaining who he or she is and how he or she reached the court.

  • Have students research a famous justice in history. Possible choices include John Jay, John Marshall, Sandra Day O’Conner, or William H. Taft

  • Hold a class discussion. Ask students: What might be some challenges of being a Supreme Court justice?

  • Have students research Tinker v. Des Moines School District, a famous Supreme Court case that involved kids. Ask: What was the case about? Do you agree with the justices’ decision? Why or why not?
